Lean for the printing, graphics, and converting industry The graphics industry is highly competitive. Printers and converters have similar prepress and production equipment. A key to ensuring survival and profitability in the industry is lowering costs and constantly striving to improve productivity. The best way to accomplish this is implement LEAN! It will dramatically reduce wasteful activity to provide cost savings, reduce changeover time for increasingly smaller production runs, and eliminate downtime costs!" Need evidence.....try a LEAN pilot project. Simply pick a work centre (i.e. press) and implement a basic 5S program. You will be amazed at how quickly changeover times fall, and productivity skyrockets! Then add a basic TPM program to the equation and you will witness quality improve, maintenance costs drop, and machine throughput go up through the roof! LEAN improvements are free of capital expenditures! and the results will have you implementing across the organization!

Lean leadership: walking the talk Lean efforts for the work space of an organization’s leadership will inevitably lead to Lean success and sustainment on the production floor. Case in point, the Papercone Corporation of Louisville KY where the leadership implemented 5S for their respective offices. It was instantly recognized by the production employees!...who in turn noticeably increased their own Lean efforts! 5S for Papercone’s Vice President’s office. Before and after pictures: |
